The Shiny New Object Syndrome: Why Your Skin Needs Patience, Not Just Products

Like many people, I’m naturally drawn to things that are new, shiny, and trending. That curiosity has shown up in different areas of my life, including my skincare journey.

Let’s rewind to about 10 years ago, when I had just discovered my passion for skincare. I was eager to correct all the wrong things I had unknowingly done to my skin over the years. So I did what anyone else would do. I went online and started searching.

The Overload of Skincare Advice

One quick Google search, and I was bombarded with product recommendations. Each one claimed to be “the best” at solving different skin issues. It was overwhelming. But I dove in anyway. I jumped from one product to the next, never giving any of them enough time to actually make a difference.

At the time, I didn’t realize what I was doing had a name. It’s called the shiny new object syndrome.

I spent months chasing trends. Whatever was hot in the beauty space that month, I wanted to try it. But with every switch, my skin got worse.

The Real Problem Wasn’t the Products

Looking back, I blamed the products. I’d tell myself they just didn’t work for me. But the truth is, I was the problem. I was inconsistent. I wasn’t giving my skin the time and space it needed to adjust. And without consistency, even the best products won’t deliver results.

Skincare requires patience. It requires a steady hand and the willingness to stick it out through the ups and downs. That’s a hard pill to swallow in a world where we’re sold instant results.

What Finally Worked for Me

Eventually, I made up my mind. I found a skincare brand whose values, science, and story aligned with what I had been searching for. I stopped chasing trends and decided to give this one brand a real shot.

It took almost five months of consistent use. There were purging phases, unexpected breakouts, and emotional frustrations. But slowly, my skin started to shift. It began to heal. It found balance.

That moment changed everything for me.

Here’s What I Wish I Knew Earlier

If you’re struggling with your skin, here’s my honest advice:
Do your research. Choose products that are designed for your specific concern. Then commit. Give them time to work. You will face challenges along the way. Some days your skin will feel like it’s going backwards. But if you stay the course, your results will come.

And when they do, I’ll be the quiet voice in your head whispering, “I told you so.”
